Please avoid using Mayo Construction. I hired Ray Mayo to build a custom 2 car garage addition on my existing home. His sub-constructors caused over $10K in damage to my existing drive way which Ray refused to repair. He hired a â companyâ that has no website, phone number, address, or even legitimate LLC. We are know getting lawyers and insurance companies involved to recoup damages. I found Ray to be dishonest, misleading and deceitful on multiple occasions. Some of the work he did performed was sub par and I am left with additional expenses (the roof leaks as an example). Ray and his team went over 8 weeks without completing any work on the garage leaving untreated lumber exposed to the elements. He would avoid calls and txts during this time while he admitted that he was â busyâ building his own home. I eventually had to hire out the remaining work myself to finish the project after Ray admitted that he couldnâ t source the labor needed to instal siding, gutters, and finish the grading. One of his sub contractors asked me if I could help him get paid by Ray (this despite me making all my installment payments on time). This experience has caused my family tremendous headache and stress and it will likely be an ongoing issue for a couple years before we collect for all our damages.

I was told the project would be 8-10 weeks and it ended up being over 6 months. There would be sometimes two weeks before anybody would show up and then do only a couple hours work and only after I would call.

Time was the biggest problem I had. I was told project would take 5 weeks and 16 weeks later it's done. Some finishing work looked bad but Ray fixed issues

Treated us very well. Whenever we had a concern about or addition Ray addressed it quickly. Like others have said before. Basic construction goes very smooth. The job did slow down a little from the drywall to the finish stage, but I am very satisfied with my final product. I would recommend to my family members.

A true nightmare. Multiple thefts, $70,000+ worth of damage, terrible workmanship. We were forced to fire this company. We were quoted an 8-week job to do a second story and porch addition on a house we just purchased. More than a year later the project was not done, it needed countless repairs, and there was no end in sight. We eventually cut our heavy losses and fired Ray Mayo. This was honestly one of the worst experiences of our lives. First was the theft. Rays workers stole multiple times from us. At first it was a few lighting and bathroom fixtures. Then it was my wifes engagement ring--gone forever. Ray has been in business for a long time. So it should have been a red flag when he started showing up with subcontractors he had never worked with before. The vast majority of them walked off the job, saying they could no longer work with Ray. One sub showed up at our house on a Saturday morning threatening to lien our property because of Ray. It became painfully obvious that Ray ran out of money sometime early on in our job. He kept asking us to front him money so he could finish the job (a BAD sign). He kept saying Oh Ill be there next week, next week, next week and wouldnt show up for weeks on end until we would call him and force him to. Our house sat uncovered (no house wrap or anything just OSB exposed to rain, sun, etc.) for six months. Six months. We are still concerned about the structural integrity of the house because of this. After delaying our move-in date twice, we finally moved in to an unfinished house with cracking, water damaged walls, nonworking plumbing, flooded and buckling wood floors, and exposed wire hanging out of ceilings and walls. It was unbelievable. When Rays crew took the roof off our house to build up and replace it, his incompetent workers didnt bother to take the time to tarp well, and water poured in. When we finally settled an insurance claim for the nearly $70,000 in damage to the house (only some of which insurance covered), we had to move back out of the house for two months, with a baby and a toddler in tow, to replace all of the first floor exterior walls and to replace our original hardwood floors. It was horrific. And if that wasnt bad enough, when Ray took off our existing attic and roof, his crew did not bother to contain any of the debris, resulting in them raining old lead paint all over our yard. The lead levels we tested from the yard came back so toxic that we had to rip up our entire back and side yards to remediate. The work that was actually completed was done horribly. I have a front porch that is sinking and that has to be ripped up and redone. I have drywall that moves because it was just taped together and not actually screwed into studs. We failed every inspection at least once. The toll this has taken on us, both emotionally and financially, has been terrible. Please do not put yourselves through what we went through. I

Response from Company:

We totally disagree with this review. This was an extremely major remolding job. Ray Mayo would NEVER have promised to be complete in 8 weeks. This was an old house that had been vacant for quite some time before the customer purchased this home. Our company was hired to remove the existing mold & mildew in the basement. That was completed. We removed the entire upper level of the existing home to create a full second story - making the home a two story instead of a story & a half. The house was totally demolished down to the first floor ceiling joist. ALL debris was immediately placed in trash trailers (a total of 10 thru this job) that were parked directly beside of the house on the owners drive way. If any debris ended up in the yard we immediately removed it. While the entire second story was off of the house we built a tarp over this house. At one point this tarp had a small failure. Water did weep down the wall studs and created a few a few puddles (approx. 1/8" deep and about 3' in diameter). These were wiped up immediately (we happened to be on the job at this time). We offered to sand and finish this flooring for the customer, but customer had new flooring installed. As far as theft - this house was wide open when the entire second story was off. The customer started delivering a few items, such as a paddle fan in a box, and a faucet in a box before the house could be locked up. Those items became missing. We have been in business since 1978 and have never had any theft on our jobs. Our workers are very reputable. . The customer also hired other contractors during our project to do work that we did not contract to do. Such as the first floor bath. The customer was going to remodel that room but it became too much for him, so he hired a contractor. He also hired painters. We are sorry the engagement ring is missing. Again, we stand behind the integrity of our workers. The customer wanted to move in to this home before we were even close to being complete. They ask Ray if that was possible, Ray said he could work around them. It is very difficult to live in a home during such a major remodeling project, especially with two little children. It is extremely trying for any home owner. The customer was concerned about the exposed OSB. Ray tried to assure the home owner that is was not compromised. To assure the customer, Ray ask the City of Grandview Heights Building Dept. to hold a special inspection of the OSB. The OSB passed their inspection. Concerning the lead paint chips in the yard, our company placed all debris in the trash trailers but if any trash did not get into the trailer (the first try) and left any paint chips in the yard, Ray had all dirt around the house totally dug up and removed and had new top soil delivered & finish graded, grass seeded this area, and straw spread on top. While this was being done, the customer insisted the entire back yard done the same way. We never worked in the rear of th

Basic construction done very well. Needed minor changes after built and that was done quickly and well. Job was caulked with silicone caulk and could not get paint to adhere. Promised to replace with correct caulk but has not been done yet. No idea when work will be completed.
